Terminal
Anadyr
A strategic hub of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), providing cargo transshipment in challenging Arctic conditions. The port is located on the shore of the Anadyr Estuary — the mouth of the Anadyr River flowing into the Anadyr Gulf of the Bering Sea.
Historical background
In accordance with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated May 20, 1955 No. 1044 and the Order of the Minister of the USSR Merchant Fleet dated May 28, 1955 No. 237, a port station was established in the settlement of Anadyr and assigned to the Port of Provideniya.
According to the Order of the Ministry of the Merchant Fleet of the USSR No. 140 dated July 2, 1961, the port station was reorganized into the Anadyr Sea Commercial Port of the 3rd category. In 1971 it was upgraded to the 2nd category, and in 1985 to the 1st category. In 1993 the port was reorganized into the open joint-stock company "Anadyr Sea Port".
On June 15, 2001, by decision of the general shareholders' meeting, JSC "Anadyrmorport" was renamed the open joint-stock company "Anadyr Sea Port" (OJSC "Anadyrmorport").
The port is a full member of the Association of Commercial Sea Ports (ASOP).
Port characteristics
The port is accessible to vessels with a draft of up to 7.5 m. The maximum vessel length handled at the marine terminal is 177 m and the maximum beam is 25 m. Cargo operations are carried out using portal cranes and shipboard equipment for long cargo up to 12 meters in length and weighing up to 40 tons. The port is open to vessels during the summer navigation period from June to October. At the beginning and end of the navigation season, vessels are escorted by line icebreakers.
The port serves as a transshipment base for cargo transported upstream along the Anadyr River to the settlements of Yary, Snezhnoye, Ust-Belaya, Krasneno, Kanchalan, and the left-bank berths in the Anadyr Estuary. The port operates its own coastal fleet, which delivers general, bulk, and liquid cargo to coastal settlements. Passenger transportation is also provided. The river navigation period lasts 2.5 months (from July 1 to September 15).
Geographical location
The port is located in the northwestern part of the Bering Sea, in the estuary of the Anadyr River within the Anadyr Gulf — a large rectangular bay with an entrance width of about 400 km and a maximum depth of about 105 m. Ice cover persists for a significant part of the year, resulting in seasonal navigation.
Water area and depths
The harbor is equipped with 8 anchorage points with an average depth of 12 meters. The length of the port water area within the estuary itself is significantly smaller and is defined by the extent of the estuary where the port is located.
Development prospects
The Port of Anadyr and its marine terminals are key to the development of the Northern Sea Route in the Russian Far East. Measures are planned to increase capacity, modernize cargo handling facilities, and strengthen infrastructure for operations in Arctic conditions.
