Historical background

Provideniya Bay was discovered in 1660 by the Russian navigator Kurbat Ivanov. It received its name in 1848 after the successful wintering of the British ship "Plover" under the command of Captain Thomas Moore, who was searching for the lost Franklin expedition.

The Provideniya seaport is equipped with a 208-meter berth wall, with depths ranging from 10 to 13 meters. The crane equipment allows handling cargo weighing up to 40 tons, and the port's annual capacity is up to 350 thousand tons.

The repair and maintenance base established in the Soviet era makes it possible to carry out non-drydock fleet repairs, including propeller shaft machining.

A multifunctional cargo and passenger checkpoint across the state border of the Russian Federation operates at the seaport.

The settlement has a population of 2,500 people, an operating airport, an oil depot, and available electrical capacity.

Port characteristics

Vessels with a draft of up to 14 meters are allowed to enter the port waters. Since 2021, Provideniya Bay has remained ice-free year-round, with no tides, strong sea currents, or storms. The unified berth line of Provideniya Port totals 269 meters. Depths alongside the berths reach up to 10 meters. In accordance with the mandatory port regulations of Provideniya, vessels up to 200 meters in length and with a draft of up to 8.5 meters are accepted at the berth.

Cargo handling equipment along the berth line includes two Sokol portal cranes with a lifting capacity of 16–32 tons and an outreach of 8–32 meters, as well as two Albatros portal cranes with a lifting capacity of 10–20 tons and an outreach of 8–32 meters. The active storage areas can simultaneously accommodate up to 1,250 TEU.

Geographical location

Provideniya Port is located on the opposite shore of Emma Bay. The site offers available land for terminal development with unique natural characteristics. It is the only port in the Russian Federation located in the Western Hemisphere and the closest Russian port to the Bering Strait.

Water area and depths

The bay is equipped with 12 anchorages with depths ranging from 14 to 9 meters, ensuring safe anchorage for vessels of various tonnage.

Development prospects

The development prospects of Provideniya are determined by its geographical location and the favorable natural conditions of the bay. The acquisition of additional equipment, expansion of storage and rear areas, reconstruction of berths, and a number of measures aimed at increasing the energy capacity of the port infrastructure will increase the port’s throughput to up to 1.8 million tons per year. The total investment volume is estimated at approximately 10 billion rubles.
